Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and is essential to good health. Approximately 50% of total body magnesium is found in bone. The other half is found predominantly inside cells of body tissues and organs.
Eating a variety of whole grains, legumes, and vegetables (especially dark-green, leafy vegetables) every day will help provide recommended intakes of magnesium, however, increasing dietary intake of magnesium may not be enough to restore low magnesium levels to normal. Supplementation with magnesium is therefore recommended. A food form of magnesium, as contained in the Sportron Magnetone tablets, has a better bioavailability than isolated magnesium salts i.e. the amount of magnesium that is absorbed in the intestines and ultimately available for biological activity in your cells and tissues is higher.
Magnesium is needed for more than 300 metabolic processes in the body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, supports healthy immune system, and keeps bones strong. Magnesium also helps regulate blood sugar levels and is known to be involved in energy metabolism and protein synthesis. It also has a role in the acid-alkaline balance in the body. There is an increased interest in the role of magnesium in preventing and managing many chronic disorders, especially those linked to inflammation and circulatory system function.
Magnesium deficiency
Many lifestyle factors cause a magnesium deficiency. These include smoking, intense exercise, diet and prolonged stress. The foods we consume do not contain enough magnesium for our bodies. There are many reasons for this, for instance boiled, refined and processed foods are stripped of most of their magnesium.
A magnesium deficiency may also be associated with a specific health problem or condition that causes an excessive loss of magnesium or limits magnesium absorption. There are also certain drugs that interact with magnesium and change the body's status:
A magnesium deficiency is fairly common so if you feel any of the following symptoms, you may be deficient in magnesium: loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and weakness. As magnesium deficiency worsens, numbness, tingling, muscle contractions and cramps, sudden changes in behaviors caused by excessive electrical activity in the brain, personality changes and abnormal heart rhythms. Severe magnesium deficiency can result in low levels of calcium (hypocalcemia) and potassium (hypokalemia) in the blood.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, obtained by exposure to sunlight or from the diet. Very few foods naturally contain Vitamin D whereas exposure to the sun provides as much as 90% of the body's Vitamin D. Exposing the full body to the sun can result in as much as 10 000 units of Vitamin D being made by the body. Exposure to sunlight may not always be sufficient for Vitamin D synthesis in the skin. Factors such as altitude, the season of the year, cloud cover and ozone levels all determine the intensity of the sunlight and hence the amount of Vitamin D formed in the skin. Most people are also staying out of the sun or applying sunblock (often contained in face moisturisers and other cosmetics) which dramatically reduces Vitamin D production and so the need for a supplement has become necessary.
There are two forms of Vitamin D that are physiologically important, ergocalciferol (Vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3). Ergocalciferol and cholecalciferol have for many years, been considered to be equally potent and effective in humans, however, more recent research shows that cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) is significantly more potent that ergocalciferol. Ergocalciferol appears to be less than one-third the potency of cholecalciferol. Both forms of Vitamin D are well absorbed, but cholecalciferol appears to be more efficient in raising 25-hydroxyvitamin D serum levels, which is the best measure of Vitamin D status. Sportron D-Gard contains the more potent Vitamin D3.
Functions of Vitamin D
The main function of Vitamin D is to regulate the blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. It helps in the intestinal absorption of Calcium. Since Vitamin D is important for regulating calcium and for bone health, it is necessary for growth in children and it is used to help prevent osteoporosis.
Vitamin D is helpful for maintaining a stable nervous system, normal heart action and for blood clotting, because all of these functions are linked to the body's utilization of Calcium and Phosphorus.
Vitamin D also plays a role in lung and immune function, and is especially beneficial for decreasing immune-mediated inflammation.
Deficiency and Supplementation
Vitamin D deficiency will lead to inadequate absorption of Calcium and hence faulty mineralization of bone so bones become softer and unable to withstand stress. Deficiency therefore, causes muscle pain and weakness with symptoms such as heaviness in the legs, rapid fatigue, and problems with climbing stairs.
Vitamin D supplementation may be needed be elderly people who have limited sun exposure, as well as people with gastrointestinal diseases as they have a malabsorption of Vitamin D from their diet.
